A Laramie man accused of cocaine possession denied the charge Thursday morning in Albany County District Court.

Nathaniel Kennaday, 24, pleaded not guilty to one charge of felony cocaine possession. If convicted, he faces up to seven years in prison and a $15,000 fine.

Kennaday was arrested Sept. 24 after an Albany County Sheriff’s deputy pulled him over for speeding on U.S Highway 287.

According to the affidavit, the deputy clocked Kennaday’s Mitsubishi Eclipse at 116 mph in a 70-mph speed zone. The deputy smelled marijuana when he approached the driver’s side window and searched the car, court documents say.

The deputy allegedly found two large rocks and white powder in plastic baggies inside of a fast-food cup, along with a folding mirror with white powder residue on it.

In a mirandized interview, Kennaday said that the two large rocks and powder were cocaine and that the weight was about one and a half ounces, according to the affidavit. The deputy found the weight of the cocaine to be just over an ounce and a half.

Kennaday remains free on $10,000 signature bond. His trial is set for March 1-2.

Albany County District Court Judge Jeffrey Donnell will not be presiding over the cases, as his son was the arresting deputy. He is set to retire Jan. 2.
