Lady Plainsmen Went Through A Long Weekend

The Laramie Lady Plainsmen wrapped up a five-game home-stand with a pair of losses to the top two ranked teams in the state.

Laramie (5-14, 0-8) lost Friday to number one Sheridan, 63-39. That was followed by a 77-32 defeat to second ranked Gillette last Saturday.

Sheridan (19-1, 9-0) jumped out to an 18-4 lead after and rolled to the 24-point victory last Friday night. The Lady Plainsmen made a small push with a 7-0 spurt at the end of the first half. That cut the deficit to 26-16 at the break. The Lady Broncs responded with the first eight points of the second half. That made it 34-16, and LHS failed to get closer than 14 the rest of the game.

Laramie head coach Kyle Stucky said,

"They're a pretty good ball club. There's a reason they're number one in the state."

Savannah Cox scored a game-high 16 points, while Alexis Pickerd added ten points and ten rebounds for Laramie. The Lady Plainsmen shot only 24 percent from the field.

Robbi Ryan led Sheridan with 14 points. Jennae Fieldgrove chipped in 13 points. The Lady Broncs shot 46 percent from the field.

Number two Gillette took it to Laramie Saturday afternoon and rolled to a 77-32 win.

The Lady Plainsmen had a few two point leads, but a Maddi Hinshaw three-pointer gave the Lady Camels the lead for good in the first quarter. It was 12-6 as the game went into the second, when Gillette exploded. They out-scored LHS 26-9 in the period and led 38-15 at half. The game reached the 40-point, running clock rule with about five minutes left.

Stucky said, "Gillette can beat you in so many ways. They've got so many kids that can score. I just look at the distribution of scoring throughout their squad, it's pretty impressive. They all shoot it very well."

Pickerd led Laramie with 11 points and five rebounds. The Lady Plainsmen were held to 33 percent from the floor. They also finished with 30 turnovers.

Gillette (17-3, 8-1) had five players in double figures led by Hinshaw's 17 points. The Lady Camels shot only 39 percent, but knocked down ten 3-point field goals. They attempted 24 more field goals than LHS.

Laramie concludes the regular season on the road at number five Cheyenne Central Thursday night and at number three Cheyenne East Friday night. Both games will start at 6 p.m.
