The 2016 Wyoming State Volleyball Championships begin Thursday and go through Saturday at the Casper Events Center.

The Laramie Lady Plainsmen will be vying for the school’s second-ever state title over the next three days. Their only championship came 22 years ago in 1994. The closest they’ve been since was a second place finish in 2011.

Laramie (23-8) enters this state tournament as a second seed from the East Conference. They face the only 4A team they didn’t play in the regular season this year, the Evanston Red Devils, who are the West conference third seed.

Last year the Lady Plainsmen knocked off Kelly Walsh in the first round, but were swept in the semifinals by the Red Devils. Laramie then was ousted in consolation by Sheridan.

This year second-year head coach Rebecca Stewart has the Lady Plainsmen excited to be back at state, but focused on only Thursday’s match.

Junior outside hitter Katie Welniak is happy with how they’re playing going into the state tournament. She also mentions a little payback against Evanston.

Laramie takes on the Red Devils at 2:30 p.m. Thursday on Court 4A in the Casper Events Center. The winner will face the winner of Kelly Walsh and Sheridan Friday at 4:30 p.m.
