Cheyenne Police Chief Brian Kozak says the impact of a Colorado vote legalizing the recreational use of marijuana is being felt locally.

Kozak says he personally arrested a motorist for Driving Under the Influence of marijuana on New Year's Eve who told him that he had legally purchased the pot in Colorado. Kozak says the motorist said he believed that since he had purchased the drug legally, it was not illegal to drive while using it in Cheyenne. Kozak says another man who was recently arrested for selling marijuana told police he had legally purchased the pot at a Colorado dispensary and was the bringing it back to Cheyenne to sell.

Kozak says he wants Cheyenne residents to be aware the drug is still illegal in Wyoming, and says police will especially be watching for people driving under the influence of the drug. He says the Laramie County District Court Judges have decreed that anyone cited for marijuana possession must be booked into the Laramie County Detention Facility, although he adds that decree was not related to the Colorado law.

Colorado voters in November decided to legalize the recreational use of marijuana, although the drug remains illegal under federal law.
