Kern Resigns as Plainsmen Basketball Coach

The Laramie Plainsmen will have a new head basketball coach next season. Chuck Kern is stepping down after three seasons at the helm.

Kern went 36-35 in his tenure with the Plainsmen. That included a 15-15 record in the 4A East Conference.

The resignation will become official at the next school board meeting within the Albany County School District in April.

Kern's best season was his first. The Plainsmen went 19-7 during the 2012-13 season, which included an 8-2 mark and runner-up finish in the 4A East Conference.

Over the past two seasons, the Plainsmen were 5-19 overall and 2-8 in the conference during the 2013-14 season and finished 12-9 and 5-5 in the 4A East last season.

Laramie's only appearance at the 4A State Basketball tournament was in 2013. They've lost in the first round at the 4A East Regional tournament each of the past two seasons.

Kern coached two all-state and five first-team all-conference players at Laramie High School.

His teams' finished in the top half of class 4A in offensive points per game during all three of Kern's seasons. They improved to fourth defensively last season, as Laramie allowed only 50 points per game.

Coach Kern and the administration at Laramie High School are not available for comment until the resignation is accepted at the next school board meeting.

Laramie becomes the third school in 4A with head varsity basketball coaching vacancy. They join Rock Springs and Green River.
