Ice Fishing Sites Around Laramie – Our Top 5

Wyoming Department of Tourism

Alright, I’ll be honest with you. I’m not a very good ice fisherman. I love the outdoors and I don’t mind fishing (or drowning worms while I waste hours and hours of time). However, I have friends that are avid, maybe even rabid ice-fishing fans. I spoke to a couple of them recently. They refused to go into a great deal of detail. I think they have their spots and they’re not sharing. At any rate, I did get some locations. And so, here are the consensus top five areas.

5

Crystal Reservoir

Crystal Reservoir is small and cold. I mean cold. Even in the summer, that water temperature can leave you breathless. Crystal is the smallest of the reservoirs at Curt Gowdy State Park and offers shoreline fishing during the non-ice fishing season. But, when it freezes over, you can go after Brown, Rainbow and Kokanee Salmon. I have it on good authority that there has been some recent stocking of Lake Trout as well.

4

North Crow Reservoir

This Reservoir is un-improved and is recommended for day use. It’s a 75-acre reservoir located just North of Curt Gowdy Sate Park. It offers great fishing year round but I’m sure that Ice Fishermen of all abilities will enjoy this one. It has also recently been stocked with Lake Trout. It is also the on;y place around where you can catch Grayling.

3

Granite Reservoir

It’s turning into a Curt Gowdy State Park Tri-Fecta, here. Granite Resevoir is also located within the confines of the park. Granite Reservoir was constructed in the early, early 1900’s. There were modifications made in 1987.

2

Lake Owen

To quote my source, “If you don’t know how to operate a good snowmobile, you might find it difficult to get to Lake Owen during the ice-fishing season”. But, the trip is definitely worth it and offers some really nice fishing and solitude.

1

Lake Hattie

I have friends who live near Lake Hattie and I don’t think the Mom or Daughter has ever fished there, but plenty of folks have. It’s reported to me that there aren’t an amazing number of fish to be caught on Hattie, but the ones that do hit are larger than most around the area. And as a bit of coincidence and serendipity, the weekend coming up (Janurary 7th and 8th) is the annual Lake Hattie Ice-Fishing derby.
