INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The health insurance company Anthem says the hackers who got into its computer network were able to gain access to personal information for "tens of millions" of customers and employees. Those employees include the company's CEO.

The nation's second-biggest health insurer says it's contacting customers who were affected.

The hackers were able to see names, birth dates, email addresses, employment details, Social Security numbers, incomes and street addresses of current and past customers. But the company says credit card information wasn't compromised. And it hasn't found any evidence that medical information was targeted.

Anthem recently changed its name from WellPoint. It runs Blue Cross Blue Shield plans in more than a dozen states, and covers more than 37 million people.

The company says the FBI is investigating the hacking attack, and that it's hired an Internet security company to improve its network defenses. Anthem says it will provide free credit monitoring and identity protection services.

In a related story, the government is worried that Medicare information was stolen as part of the hacking attack on Anthem.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The federal government is investigating whether the personal information of Medicare beneficiaries was stolen by hackers who breached health insurer Anthem's computer networks.

The Health and Human Services inspector general's office said Thursday it is assessing whether personal data about Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries has been compromised.

Government programs are a major business for Anthem, the nation's second-largest health insurance company. It offers Medicare Advantage health insurance plans, Medicaid managed care coverage, as well as subsidized insurance under the president's health care law.

The company says hackers broke into a database storing such identifying details as names, addresses and Social Security numbers of about 80 million customers.

The FBI is taking the lead in the investigation.

The HHS inspector general's office often works with the FBI on health fraud cases.
