Hot-Shooting Carries Cowgirls Past the Aztecs

The Wyoming Cowgirls scorched the nets at the Arena-Auditorium Wednesday night and beat San Diego State, 80-67.

Wyoming (16-5, 8-2) shot a season-high 66 percent and in the process stopped their two-game losing skid. The Cowgirls went 33-50 from the field. They also scored a season-best 50 points in the paint and out-rebounded the Aztecs, 32-18.

UW head coach Joe Legerski said a release from the university that it was good to be back at home.

“No matter how well we’ve been playing, when you lose a couple of games, it rocks your confidence. To see the amount of people that scored in double-digits, I was happy with that because that’s who we are. Everyone shooting the basketball and stepping up to the plate.”

Liv Roberts led five Cowgirls in double figures with a game-high 24 points. Clara Tapia recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 10 assists.

UW took control with a 19-6 run in the second quarter. They never trailed after that. The run gave the Cowgirls a 43-31 halftime lead. The lead reached 19 points, and the Aztecs got no closer than 13 the rest of the game.

San Diego State (8-12, 3-6) was led by McKynzie Fort with 18 points. They shot 46 percent for the game.

Wyoming returns to action Saturday against Air Force. Tip-off at the Double-A is at 2 p.m.
