The approach of the first winter storm of the season has brought extreme high winds with it, prompting the Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) to close Interstate 25 to high profile vehicles from Cheyenne to Glendo.  Troopers in the Laramie area have responded to seven blown over vehicles between Laramie and Arlington, including six semis and one pickup pulling a 5th wheel trailer. Peak wind gusts have been recorded by WYDOT weather sensors at 78 mph on Interstate 80 at Cooper Cove, which is 30 miles west of Laramie.

By 9:00 a.m. this morning Troopers in the Wheatland area had already been dispatched to eight semis that had been blown. Wind gusts to 73 mph have been recorded by WYDOT at Bordeaux approximately eight miles south of Wheatland.

There have been injuries reported in several of the blow over crashes, however Sgt. Townsend of the WHP says it is unknown how severe those injuries are at this time.

WYDOT has posted strong wind advisories warning light wight, high profile vehicles against travel. The WHP warns that any driver who fails to comply with the "no light trailer" advisory and who is involved in a crash may be subject to a fine and can expect to pay the cleanup costs and fees associated with repairing any damage caused to public and/or private property.
