For a fourth straight year the Laramie Plainsmen rose above the competition at the 2015 Wyoming State Cross Country Championships last Saturday in Sheridan.

Led by senior Chris Henry, who captured a second individual title in a row, the Plainsmen dominated the field in route to a 4-peat. Laramie placed their top five runners in the top nine.

Henry missed his goal of a course record, but still topped the field by 40 seconds. His time was 15:29.39.

The senior said to be a two-time champ feels pretty good.

“I was pretty ecstatic after I finished the race realizing that it’s over, and that I had accomplished my goal again.”

Not far behind was Albert Steiner. He came in third place. Colin Rucinski finished sixth, while Liam McInroy and Philip Henry took eighth and ninth, respectively. All five earned All-State honors.

The Plainsmen won with a total score of 27 points. Runner-up Rock Springs came in a distant second with 99 points. Evanston was third at 108 points.

Henry said the team title means a lot.

“Knowing we can all step up and push ourselves. Cause after the first year, that’s been motivating us to continue that tradition and keep winning state. It’s just great to a have a full team that’s like wanting to compete; and being competitive; and has enough talent to complete such a feat.”

The Laramie Lady Plainsmen weren’t able to complete the sweep. They finished in third place with 84 points. Central won the title with 68 points, while Gillette was second with 74.

Junior Allison McElwee took tenth with a time of 19:44.06 and earned her first All-State honor. She finished just in front of teammate Maria Smith-Lopez, who was 11th.

Laramie cross country head coach Greg Schabron will be a guest during ‘Laramie Live on KOWB’ Wednesday at 9:40 a.m.
