Governor Mead Signs School Bus Camera Bill [AUDIO]
Governor Matt Mead signed original House Bill 5, a bill that would help school districts equip their school buses with cameras to catch motorists who illegally pass buses stopped to pick up and drop off students.
The governor was surrounded by friends and classmates of 11 year old MaKayla Marie Strahle of Crowheart. Makayla was struck and killed on December 20, 2011 as she crossed a highway after getting off a school bus that had its flashing lights activated.
Governor Mead said the students were instrumental in getting the bill passed. He added he couldn't think of another bill that "has been more relevant in terms of students, young people, citizens and legislators in coming together to address an issue that we know will save lives in the future."
The governor gave each of the students a pen commemorating the bill signing in honor of MaKayla.
