Forward Wyoming Grassroots Institute Teaches Activism, Engagement

Young Wyomingites interested in civic engagement and activism have the opportunity to learn the basics during the spring 2018 Forward Wyoming Grassroots Institute.

Forward Wyoming is currently accepting applications to the institute, which launches on Feb 21. The institute consists of 10 workshops held on Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

LeeAnn Grapes, Forward Wyoming executive director, said the institute aims to help young Wyomingites gain the skills and tools to become better citizens and activists.

“Grassroot Institute fellows, as we call them, can expect to get a pretty diverse experience,” Grapes said. “We talk about Wyoming’s political landscape, the issues facing our state right now and what young people can do to make progress on those issues.”

Grapes said the institute will bring in guest speakers from other local Wyoming organizations to give a diverse perspective on grassroots organizing in Wyoming. She said the fellows will be given hands-on organizing experience in organizing and will use their skills on a project dedicated to a specific issue.

Grapes said the institute is geared towards college students and young professionals, but it is open to anyone interested in community organizing. Grapes said the institute is a great option for college students and young professionals looking to network, as well.

“One of the great parts about the grassroots institute is that you get to meet other people and organizations in our community who are working to make change and is a great chance to network and get to know some other folks and grow your own community of forward thinking people in Wyoming.”

Grapes said those who want to apply can do so at the Forward Wyoming website. Grapes said the application deadline has been extended to Feb. 14.
