A car crash 7 miles east of Cheyenne left one man dead and part of Interstate-80 closed for 6 hours Sunday morning.

David E. Williams of Lindenwood Illinois was driving his truck on the icy and snow-covered I-80 East, when a passing tractor trailer lost control and jack-knifed into his truck. Highway Patrol note that there was blowing snow at the time and there was limited visibility.

During the collision, both vehicles went off the road, and the tractor-trailer overturned, crushing the truck and pinning Williams and his three passengers inside.

Extrication by Fire District personnel took several hours to remove those trapped in Williams’ truck.

Williams was reported dead on the scene and all passengers of his vehicle were hospitalized including Daniel Carmichael who was later flown to a hospital in Denver.

Two people were in the tractor-trailer, neither required medical attention.

No charges have been filed against the driver of the tractor-trailer.
