Depleted by injuries, the running back position had a veteran step up his play during Wyoming’s Spring Football Game Saturday in Laramie.

Even head coach Craig Bohl referenced moving the ball on the ground after the game concluded Saturday. He was also pleased with yards after contact, and highlighted how hard the two backs ran, particularly senior Nico Evans.

Evans was the Cowboys’ third-down back last year, but really became the focal point because of injuries this spring. He carried it 18 times for 111 yards and a touchdown for the Gold Team in the spring game. Evans averaged 6.2 yards per carry. He said his experience was enjoyable.

The Brown squad was led by the only other healthy running back in sophomore Mike Green II. He had 11 carries for 43 yards and averaged 3.9 yards per carry. Green complimented Evans and was harder on himself.

Overall the ground game finished with a combined 122 yards on 47 attempts. That equates to only three yards per carry, but some of the positive plays were negated by nine sacks against the quarterbacks. That took away 55 yards from the rushing total.

Wyoming had five running backs that did not play in the spring game due to injury, which included last year’s top two ball carriers, junior Kellen Overstreet and sophomore Trey Woods.

Coach Bohl has said that competition will start over in Fall Camp, which starts in late July. Also joining the mix in the fall will be freshman Jevon Bigelow (6’2, 195) from Fresno, CA, who signed last December.
