John Elway has been named Executive Vice President of Football Operations for the Denver Broncos.  Broncos owner and CEO Pat Bowlen made the announcement Wednesday amidst hopes Elway can help lead the Broncos to yet another comeback.

Bowlen said he expects Elway to lead the Broncos to more Super Bowls.  As a player Elway took the Broncos to five Super Bowls and helped them win back-to-back championships before retiring in 1999.

Elway will direct the Broncos' football operations, which means working closely with general manager Brian Xanders and the team's head coach, yet to be determined, while supervising the club's personnel department.  Elway brings eight years of experience as a co-owner and CEO of the AFL's Colorado Crush.  He was named the league's executive of the year in 2003.  Elway also spent the 2010 season as a consultant for the Broncos' marketing initiatives.

Broncos' safety Brian Dawkins said having Elway back in the Broncos family is definitely a positive thing:

"Obviously he has a love for this organization, so you know he's going to put his best foot forward on a consistent basis to make sure that we get back to where the Broncos should be. I believe it's a positive thing, and I'm pretty sure you won't find anybody that's going to think that's a negative thing to have John back in our house."

As for Elway's reaction, he was thrilled and excited for his chance to help return the Broncos to the glory they experienced during his playing days:

"My greatest asset is my competitiveness ... I will give it everything I can to return this team back to the way it was."

This is only one of many changes to be expected within the Broncos organization during the offseason.  So far, so good.  Let's hope that trend continues.
