Dave Christensen Fined and Suspended by Wyoming AD Tom Burman
University of Wyoming Athletics Director Tom Burman announced on Monday that head football coach Dave Christensen is suspended for one week and has been fined $50,000 for his actions after the Air Force game. Christensen was informed on Monday morning of Burman’s decision.
“After a long and difficult week of consideration, I believed it was in the best interest of the University and our athletics department to take this action,” said Burman. “The reputation of our University and of our athletics programs is of the utmost importance. Over the past week I have reviewed the contract situation with our university legal department, I have spoken numerous times with President Buchanan and have consulted with other individuals in college athletics whom I respect.”
Associate head coach Pete Kaligas will serve as head coach this week and when Wyoming takes on Boise State on Saturday. Christensen will not go to any practices or be around any football facilities while the suspension is in place. Burman said he had a lot of people contact him after a YouTube video was leaked of Christensen’s comments to Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun following their game.
“The other factor that was a very important consideration of mine was the well-being of the young men in our football program. I think it is important to send the right message to them in terms of taking responsibility for your actions. This has been a difficult time for those young men. We hope that our fans will show their support for the team this coming weekend.”
University of Wyoming President Tom Buchanan stands behind Burman’s choice. “I fully support Athletics Director Tom Burman’s decision to suspend and fine our head football coach, Dave Christensen, as a result of Christensen’s unacceptable and inappropriate behavior following our Homecoming game against the Air Force Academy. Such action does not reflect the values and the integrity of our athletics program or of the University of Wyoming.”
Burman said Christensen will be reinstated on Sunday and added that Christensen will be the head coach next year. Burman addressed the media on Monday afternoon and will have no further comment.
