Three Cowgirls scored in double figures and Wyoming fought their way to a seventh straight win at Nevada Saturday, 55-51.

For the third consecutive game, UW held its opponent to under 40 percent from the field. The Cowgirls have also held all seven opponents in the win streak to under 60 points.

In a released statement from the University of Wyoming, head coach Joe Legerski said praised his team’s effort on the defensive end.

“To win on the road, as we always say, we’re looking for breakthroughs. It’s tough to play out here. I think Nevada’s a solid ball club. They just create issues for you, trying to defend against Redmon and Briggs, who are as good of an inside, outside combination as you play against. We really stepped up.”

Wyoming (16-5, 9-3) jumped to an early 11-6 lead. Nevada came back and tied it, but the Cowgirls held a 13-12 lead after the first quarter. A scoreless drought of over five-and-a-half minutes was ended by a steal and basket from Marta Gomez. That sparked an 8-0 run by UW in the second and a 21-16 lead. A Quinn Weidemann jumper at the halftime buzzer gave the Cowgirls a 27-24 lead.

The second half was more of the same. Wyoming couldn’t separate from the Wolfpack. Nevada got within one before another small run by UW of 6-0 gave the Cowgirls a 33-26 lead. They held a 39-36 lead entering the fourth quarter.  A couple of three’s by Weidemann and Karla Erjavec gave Wyoming a 49-42 lead. A lay-up by Taylor Rusk made it a 55-49 game with under two minutes left. Nevada didn’t go away, but the Wolfpack missed five free throws in the last couple of minutes. They also missed a pair of three’s with less than 30 seconds left. Wyoming ran out the clock for another victory.

Marta Gomez led the way with 13 points, Taylor Rusk had 12, and Quinn Weidemann added 11 points off the bench. The Cowgirls shot 42 percent for the game. They made only three 3-pointers (3-14, 21%).

Nevada (8-15, 4-8) was led by Jade Redmon with 14 points. The Wolfpack shot 38 percent in the game. They finished 1-9 (11%) from deep and 6-12 (50%) at the foul line.

Wyoming heads back to Nevada Wednesday, but this time will play at UNLV. The game starts at 7 p.m., Mountain Time.
