A driver of a sport utility vehicle was killed, and her passenger was injured, in a one-vehicle rollover crash near Buffalo on Wednesday, according to a news release from Wyoming Sgt. Kyle McKay.

Troopers were dispatched to milepost 291 on Interstate 25 at 2:12 p.m. about the crash, according to the news release.

The SUV was traveling about 75 mph northbound on I-25 and the driver failed to negotiate the right-hand curve.

The SUV exited the northbound right of way, the driver over-corrected to the left, crossed both northbound lanes of travel and entered the media.

The vehicle overturned over two-and-a-quarter times before it came to rest in the median.

The driver was wearing her seat belt properly, but she sustained fatal injuries due to the compartment being crushed.

The passenger also wore his seat belt. It is unknown if it failed or unbuckled during the rollover, causing him to be ejected or if he was able to get out of the SUV and then collapsed.

The Highway Patrol is investigating driver inattention as a contributing factor in the crash.

The driver has been identified as Caroline Rae Ware, 18, from Northglenn, Colo.

The passenger has been identified as Jonathan Jesse Douglas Burns, 19, from Thornton, Colo. He was taken to the Johnson County Healthcare Center in Buffalo and hospitalized.

This marked the 49th fatality on Wyoming’s highways to date in 2018 compared to 73 in 2017, 47 in 2016, and 69 in 2015.
