POWELL, Wyo. (AP) — A 48-year-old Cody man is recovering after he accidentally shot himself in the leg with a .44-caliber sidearm in northwestern Wyoming.

The Park County Sheriff's Office says Douglas Hunter was leading a team of pack horses from a trailhead back to camp in the Dead Indian Meadows area after a resupply trip Wednesday. He said he was two miles from camp when the pack horses began "acting up."

The Associated Press reports that as Hunter was attempting to regain control of the team, the lead rope caught the hammer of his sidearm, causing it to discharge. Hunter was struck in the right calf and was airlifted to a hospital in Billings, Mont.
