Campbell County School Board Authorizes Funding Lawsuit

Campbell County Republican Representative Scott Clem says he 'has issues' with a resolution passed by the Campbell County School District #1 Board of Trustees authorizing a lawsuit against the state over school funding.

The resolution doesn't actually file a lawsuit, but it would clear the way for a lawsuit to happen. Clem says one problem he has is that the resolution wasn't publicized ahead of time and was not specifically listed on the agenda.

Clem, who says he was at the meeting, says that while the board did take public comment on general education issues at the start of the meeting, no comment was taken after the resolution was formally presented.

He says the board then unanimously passed the resolution toward the end of the meeting without any public input. He also claims "They did things a little bit backward. They passed this resolution first and then they looked at the cuts that were passed down by the legislature."

The 2017 legislature approved cutting $34.5 million in school funding during the session that wrapped up earlier this month. Governor Matt Mead signed the bill into law, and the cuts are slated to take effect on July 1.
