Brown Beats Gold 24-21 in Cowboy Football Spring Game

The Brown held off the Gold team as the Wyoming Cowboys wrapped up Spring Practice last Saturday with their Annual Spring Game at War Memorial Stadium.

Brown scored 10 points in the fourth quarter for a 24-21 comeback victory.

Sophomore Josh Tapscott's 3-yard run and the ensuing extra point tied the game at 21. Justin Martin converted the game-winning 36-yard field goal with 4:44 left.

Gold had a chance to tie or win on the final possession. On fourth and one from the Brown 3-yard line, Gold went for the win, but redshirt senior Cameron Coffman's pass was incomplete in the end zone.

Wyoming head football coach Craig Bohl said the best piece they got out of Saturday's game was,

"We look more confident. We look more like a program. There's more of a stamp of how we want to be. We're certainly not there yet... it's just another step forward."

Brown jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter behind a pair of Josh Allen touchdown passes. The sophomore and junior college transfer connected with junior Jordan Ellis on a 9-yard pass and with redshirt freshman Tyree Mayfield on a 22-yard t-d.

Gold answered with 22 consecutive points in the second and third quarters.

Coffman hooked up with junior Jacob Hollister on a 54-yard scoring pass. Then, sophomore Brian Hill and redshirt freshman Nico Evans each added 1-yard touchdown runs in the third quarter. That made it 21-14 Brown.

Both teams went over 350 yards of total offense. The Brown finished with 373 yards, while Gold racked up 359 yards of offense.

There were three turnovers. An interception by Brown redshirt freshman safety Chavez Pownell Jr. led to their first score. Gold capitalized on a pair of Brown fumbles, both by Tapscott in the third quarter. They both led to touchdowns.

Bohl added a message to the fans after spring ball,

"Stay with us. Last year was not where we want to be, but it's the style of football that we're convinced is going to lead us to the promise land. Now, when that promise land's gonna be there, we certainly can't quite see it yet, but we're making progress. Hang in there with us; I think they're gonna like the product that they see on the field this next fall."

The Wyoming Cowboys head into their off-season and are just over fourth months away from the 2015 season opener September 5 at home versus North Dakota.
