ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. (AP) — The Bureau of Land Management has released a draft environmental assessment for a proposed relocation of about 1,500 wild horses.

The Rocket-Miner reports the assessment that was released on Wednesday calls for reducing populations in the Salt Wells Creek, Adobe Town and Great Divide Basin herd management areas to their low appropriate management levels.

The overall population of the areas, 2,836 wild horses, exceeds the required management level of 1,560 animals.

The bureau plans to relocate 513 of the 1,123 wild horses in the Adobe Town area, 725 of the 976 horses from the Salt Wells Creek area and 322 of the 737 animals in the Great Divide Basin area. After 1,560 animals are captured, that would leave 1,276 horses in the management areas.

The public has 30 days to submit comments on the assessment.
