Basketball Season Is Right Around the Corner

With a new season on the horizon, there was a new atmosphere surrounding the Wyoming Cowboy and Cowgirl basketball programs.

The university held its basketball media Wednesday at the Arena-Auditorium.

There’s certainly a lot of change to take in, as between the two teams, there are 15 newcomers to get to know.

The Cowgirls have only two seniors, Marquelle Dent and Jordan Kelley, while the Cowboys possess one, Josh Adams.

Both Dent and Adams admitted they are embracing their new role as “thee” leader on the team.

Dent said, “I’m definitely really comfortable. It’s nice having girls who are a lot younger than you cause they kind of just embrace it… I’m definitely trying to be more vocal at practice and making sure that I know if they’re okay with the offense; just asking if they need help with anything.”

At least for Dent, the Cowgirls have eight returning letterwinners, and she’s got another senior to lean on.

Adams on the other hand has seven lettermen back, but there are no other seniors on the roster. The Cowboys have only two juniors, and only one, Jason McManamen, has played in the brown and gold.

Josh admitted it’s different because it was easy to lead with six seniors that I grew with and became good friends with.

“It’s a little bit more difficult when you have guys that have never played in a division one game, and that you don’t know as well as you knew those guys… The big difference is I have to lead by example more than ever. I’ve got to go harder than ever, so that they follow.”

It’s still more than a month away from either team playing in even an exhibition game. When they do, you’ll want to make sure you have a roster handy to become familiar with the new-look Cowboys and Cowgirls.

The men open practice Friday and will have their exhibition game on November 7 against Fort Lewis.

The women begin practice next Tuesday. Their exhibition is set for November 5 versus Adams State.
