Agencies Working Together For Active Shooter Training At UW

More than 100 law enforcement officers from around the region will be in Laramie next week for a special training.

Officers from at least six different agencies will participate in active shooter training at the University of Wyoming July 21-23. Participating agencies include the University of Wyoming Police Department, Laramie Police Department, Albany County Sheriff’s Office, Wyoming Highway Patrol, Wyoming Game and Fish, and Wyoming State Parks.

The training is intended to prepare the agencies for scenarios where an active shooter may be present.

The training will take place at the UW War Memorial Fieldhouse.

UW Police Chief Mike Samp says this is the fourth year that an interagency training in this format has taken place in Laramie.

“Nationally there has been numerous incidents over the years including Columbine and the movie theater shooting in Colorado—very close by,” says Mike Samp. “As such, law enforcement tries to be prepared by making sure that all of our staff from the various agencies within the county train together in order to make sure we have comparable response abilities.”

Signs will be posted in the area notifying the public that it is not accessible throughout the duration of the training.

Samp says most of the training will take place inside, but the public should be aware that multiple patrol vehicles and uniformed officers will be present.

The UW Police Department will lead the training exercises.
