UW Seniors Awarded for Engineering Design Symposium Projects

Winners have been named for this years University of Wyoming’s annual College of Engineering and Applied Science Senior Design Symposium. There were approximately 130 seniors representing architectural, civil, chemical, petroleum, electrical and computer engineering and computer science. Students exhibited and presented individual and team design projects.

The projects were then evaluated by over 20 judges. Judges represented business, industry, and the University of Wyoming. Students had to design, and for some design projects, fabricate the projects selected by advisors.

Here is a look at some of the projects that were designed and fabricated by students:

  • New design approaches for 15th Street in Laramie between Garfield and Willett Drive
  • The design of a wind turbine tower test facility
  • Ibuprofen pain patch
  • UW Performing Arts Center designs
  • An automated frost-free hydrant

The results are in and the Symposium award winners for 2011 in each respective area are:

Computer Science: Concluded with a tie between the team of Zeb Fross of Lysite, WY, Paul Ogle and Odion Oisamoje both of Laramie; and the team consisting of Mark Allen of Chehalis, WA, Will Dowd of Littleton,CO, and Keith Ellington of Larkspur, CO.

Civil and Architectural Engineering: Carlos Casas of Laramie, WY, Philip Mann of Bellingham, WA, and Evgeniya Tyson of Evanston,WY were awarded with the Best Transportation Design for the roundabout design for the intersection of 15th Street and Grand Ave.

Electrical and Computer Engineering: The  Best Individual Senior Design Project was awarded to Tony Allen of Rock Springs, WY for his project on a “cellular-based multimedia alert home security system.” The Best Two Person Senior Design Project went to Ben Lampe of Cody, WY and Patrick McDowell of Sheridan, WY for their “smokehouse automation design project.”

Chemical and Petroleum Engineering: The Best Presentation went to Alyssa Hughes of Longmont,CO, Neil Neuberger of Casper, WY,  Shuai Tan of Laramie, WY and Kelsey Thrush of Berthoud, CO. Their project was called “the implementation of organosoly pretreatment into a cellulosic ethanol plant.”
